Pune – Chakan

How it happened?
It is a long story, how the connection between IID Association and Volkswagen India developed. Through initial contacts by German Government Ministers and Members of Parliament with Inter-Mission and Inter-Mission Industrial Development Association, the idea came up of VW helping the underprivileged in the area around Chakan where the German car giant Volkswagen had established its factory. After detailed discussions and surveys, it was decided that the company would give support for a Community College at a commercial complex on the road between Chakan and the factory.
On 8th September 2011 the new Community College was officially opened in the presence of the CEO and Directors of Volkswagen India, as well as the leaders of IID Association. The building owners, village president, members of the steering committee of IID at Chakan, friends and many of the public attended the opening ceremony. Some students who had already joined were part of the program.

About Chakan
Historically, Chakan has been a wholesale agricultural produce trading hub. Chakan’s agricultural market was a major onion trading center. Chakan is now home to a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) promoted by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). It has since evolved into a major automobile hub. It hosts automobile production plants for the Volkswagen Group, Daimler-Benz, Mahindra & Mahindra, Jaguar Land Rover and Bajaj Auto. Over 750 large and small industries, including a number of automobile component manufacturers are based in the area. Shiroli Chandus village, located 6 km north of Chakan, has been identified as a probable site for the proposed Pune International Airport.
