Inter-Mission Industrial Development Association (IIDA) is based in Chennai, the largest Metropolitan City in South India with an urban agglomeration population of 8 million. Of these, close to 30% live below the poverty line (i.e. the daily income earned for a family is less than the equivalent of US $ 2). 20% of the population live in slums, and the level of illiteracy, especially in the slums and impoverished areas is high. Most people do not have regular jobs and even if they do, they earn less than Rs.100 (US$ 2) daily. Unemployment is not a result of insufficient work opportunities, but it is related to lack of skill training, lack of motivation and a lack of self belief. Inter-Mission Industrial Development Association concentrates on giving relief and rehabilitation to people below the poverty line through vocational, educational and Micro Enterprise Development centers. IIDA offers job-oriented, work-related, skill-based, life-coping education to the destitute poor youth, the unemployed and the under privileged. Thousands of young men and young women who have been through the different programs that IIDA offers are a testimony to the organization, in leading lives that inspire many other underprivileged young men and women to strive for a higher standard of living.
