From the Beginning

Vocational Training had been the emphasis in IID from the beginning. The first vocational school started with a fitters course in a small thatched shed in 1974 with 7 trainees at Pallavaram, Madras. In 1976 a women’s training in handloom weaving was started in a rented shed on top of a house in Aminjikarai. Today IID has a well-equipped Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Pallavaram with Fitters, Carpenters and Welders training, recognized under the Government NCVT and ISC schemes.

It has been and will be our obligation to train young men in blue collar jobs in trades that will always be in demand and to prepare them adequately for a contemporary workplace environment.

Women’s vocational training is carried out today at the Aminjikarai Girls Training Center (GTC) in non-formal tailoring courses of various durations. At the same time we’re training young and middle aged housewives from the local community to either start or develop their skills and enable them to help contribute to their household income through garment making and design.
